The BWCA(W)

We just got back from 5 glorious days in the BWCA(W)--The (W) is for you, JB. Amelia vacationed at Grandma's while we were away.

I always get questions about what we eat on these trips, so I've published the menu below:

Friday
  • Breakfast--Donuts @ the Grand Marais donut place, fresh and warm right out of the glazer! Obviously, on the way to the put-in spot
  • Lunch--Pitas and hummus with fresh cucumbers from a friend's garden, trailmix (the M&M kind), home-made granola bars
  • Supper--Pizza (Boboli crust, tomato sauce, shredded cheese and organic onions and green peppers from the CSA) with S'mores for dessert
Saturday
  • Breakfast--Oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts, coffee
  • Lunch--Pitas and hummus with cucumbers and granola bars, trail mix (Asian kind with dried peas and those sesame seed stick things that are probably no good for you)
  • Supper--Chili-mac! A fabulous creation from BIL2 (mix up a box of Kraft mac&cheese using butter and powdered milk and combine with a can of chili)
Sunday
  • Breakfast--Bisquick biscuits with home-made jam (from strawberries my fabulous husband and mom picked), coffee
  • Lunch--Lara bars, cheese from happy cows (according to the co-op), crackers
  • Supper--Mashed potatoes with veggies! (fabulous husband dehydrated some broccoli and green/red peppers, which we reconstituted in the water we boiled to make the Betty Crocker potato buds. Oh, and we sauteed the onion left over from the pizza), S'Mores
Monday
  • Breakfast--Oatmeal with dried fruit and nuts, coffee
  • Lunch--ate @ Grandma's in Duluth
Here's a photo of the bear bag...I'm so proud of how high we got it!

We also found some wonderful wild raspberries along the way...they were everywhere up there!

Enough about the food; here are some additional scenes from the trip:

As I climbed the stairway portage (all 120 steps of it), I realized how much it was like life. Lots of up, some down, with big boulders and mud along the way. But, all of it is beautiful and you meet some nice folks along the way.
